Our clients loved their weatherboard home in Melbourne but it was small, tired and draughty and the layout was not conducive to a busy family lifestyle. Rather than demolish and rebuild, they decided to renovate and extend and we were thrilled to be appointed to transform their home for them.
The project involved opening up the interior of the existing home to create a stunning new open plan kitchen and dining area under an expansive cathedral ceiling. The beautiful timber joinery and Paperock benchtops in the kitchen were carried through into the new modern laundry and the original lounge and entrance/study were fully renovated. By installing new Bi-Fold and French doors, skylights and angled highlight windows, natural light streams in to these new spaces from all angles and there is easy access to the multiple deck areas – this is going to be an excellent home for entertaining!
The extension at the rear of the home comprises 3 bedrooms (the master with ensuite and private deck), a family bathroom and a powder room. The home was also fully renovated externally.
This renovation and extension has created a new modern family home while staying true to the character of the original house. The clients’ commitment to natural materials made the home a pleasure to build and enabled our craftsmanship and attention to detail to shine through. By carefully restoring as many materials as possible from the old house and integrating them into the new home, there is a connection to the past (and less waste). And after years of living in a cold and draughty house, insulation and double glazing were a priority to keep the home cozy in winter and cool in summer. This approach resulted in a home that is not only beautiful but also provides a healthy environment for our clients and their young family to live in.
This home has lots of personality and warmth and some delightful surprises that were added along the way – from the secret door between the children’s bedrooms, to the hidden wine cellar and the gorgeous curved deck to welcome you inside. We thoroughly enjoyed working with our clients to create a home that suits them so perfectly.
The photos below show the ‘before’ and ‘after’ transformation of the property.
