First Floor Extension, Elwood
Our first floor extension in Elwood was all about creating more space for a family with growing teenagers. Designed by Sketch Building Design, the home’s new first floor added a second living area along with a master bedroom, walk-in robe and ensuite, and a large terrace with an outdoor kitchen – perfect for entertaining.
The new spaces are flooded with light, and strategically placed louvre windows provide cool fresh breezes and enhance the sense of connection to the outdoors. With bi-fold doors connecting the new living area with the partially covered outdoor kitchen and terrace, indoor/outdoor living is easy all year ’round.
One of our favourite features of the extension is the beautiful timber cladding that not only provides a warm and natural look to the exterior but is also a common thread that links the new spaces together internally and externally.
This project was particularly satisfying for us as we were instrumental in getting it off the drawing board. The original engineering would have meant major damage to existing areas of the home, which were in great condition. The additional disruption and ‘make good’ expense was clearly not a desirable outcome for the clients and this was a potential deal breaker. Working with our engineers, we developed an alternative approach that meant the existing areas of the home could be preserved and protected whilst the extension was being built above.
